Many Liberians who have legally resided within the United States, working, paying taxes and raising family will now to forced to uproot and return home. Many of these individuals have not been home since they left, since being on TPS makes it difficult to leave the country and be allowed to re-enter. Therefore, there has not been much preparation on their part for a return home. Additionally, the current economic instability in Liberia prevents Liberians from being able to accommodate an insurge of its citizens back home.
The estimated number of Liberians on TPS is 3,000 however, many more Liberians will have to return home when TPS expires on March 31, 2009. Many Liberian families include parents with kids that were born here, but are themselves on TPS increasing the number almost threefold. These kids will also have to be uprooted and resettled in Liberia where the school systems are still trying to recover from years of civil war.
Liberia is indeed making strides, but progress is slow. A return of its citizens will severely retard its progress. Therefore, the intent of this blog is to encourage support of Senate Bill S656: Liberian Refugee Immigration Act, which will allow law-abiding Liberians to feel fully at home in a country that they have been a part of for many years. This will also allow them to be able to easily return home to help rebuild Liberia and be guaranteed re-entry upon their return.
The bill contains detailed information about how this will work. If you are in support of this bill, please use the links provided to learn more about the immigration situation of Liberians in the US, and show your support by writing to your senator in support of the bill.
